Gangtok Travel Guide | Places & Attractions

Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim has arresting destinations in a city that will amaze you. Gangtok is one of the most popular holiday hill stations in India and considered a Tibetian Buddhist center. The majestic snow-capped mountains, deep valleys, cloudy and foggy weather makes your visit to this gorgeous city totally worth it.

This city offers the view of the third largest peak in the world – Mount Kanchenjunga. Also, hikers and trekkers consider Gangtok as the base for Sikkim’s Himalayan Ranges. This land of monasteries will amaze you with its beautiful nature and unique destinations. Following are the key destinations in Gangtok that you can explore when you are touring Sikkim:

Rumtek Monastery

Rumtek Monastery is the largest and one of the most significant monasteries in Sikkim. The exquisite mountains around the monastery will definitely catch your attention. The best thing here is its unique Tibetian architecture and the entire Gangtok view from the top of the monastery. Also known as Dharma Chakra Center stands as the largest monastery in Sikkim.

Golden stupa and Nalanda Institute, Gangtok

The golden stupa is preserved here in Rumtek monastery that belongs to 16th Karmapa. The Nalanda Institute opposite the golden stupa can be visited too. Don’t confuse this institute with Nalanda University in Bihar.

Tashi viewpoint

On your way back, you can visit the Tashi viewpoint to feel close to nature while admiring the mountain view with a sip of hot tea. This place is a popular spot for sunrise and sunset views. Gangtok is such a beautiful city that even if you plan to visit limited spots, it will stop you at some beautiful destinations on your way.

Bakthang Waterfall

The broad horizontal flow of the falls makes this waterfall very arresting. Located near the Tashi viewpoint, it is worth stopping at this waterfall to relish the fresh waters at this point. This picturesque spot will definitely add a marvelous location to your Gangtok travel diaries.

Hanuman Tok

The next destination we visited was Hanuman Tok – The Hanuman Temple. It is believed that Lord Hanuman took rest at this spot while carrying Sanjeevani mountain from the Himalayas to Lanka. This religious place gives pleasant vibes while enjoying its lush greenery surrounding. You can also get a view of Mount Kanchenjunga from this point.

Ganesh Tok

Mount Kanchenjunga

Similar to Hanuman Tok, there is another point – Ganesh Tok. This lovely viewpoint has a small Ganesh temple, which can fit only one person at a time. In order to offer prayers to Lord Ganesha, one has to crawl to reach there. The snowy mountain sight from this point is mesmerizing. Mount Kanchenjunga’s beauty can be admired from this point too.

Flower Exhibition center, Gangtok

One of the best places for nature and photography lovers would be the Flower Exhibition Center. This place houses prolific flowers around the Sikkim on one roof that you will be flabbergasted by the colorful flowers and dazzling fragrance. The variety of flowers engaged me the whole time for clicking pictures and getting lost in the ambiance.

Mall Road Gangtok

Later, you can enjoy your evening shopping and roaming in the chilly surroundings at mall road. According to me, you can experience the city vibes when you explore like a local. And the mall road doubles up your Gangtok local experience. Don’t forget to eat the famous and delicious momos here.

Ropeway ride

The ropeway ride in Gangtok is a famous activity for travelers to get an aerial view of the city in the midst of an enchanting climate. If you have some time left during your day at Gangtok then you can definitely experience this.

Do Drul Chorten Stupa

If you are planning a longer stay in Gangtok, then surely visit Do Drul Chorten Stupa near Mall Road. One of the important stupas of Sikkim is a tranquil place that attracts many travelers and devotees to experience calmness. It has a special golden dome that can be seen from various places in the city.

The Gangtok city tour is totally relishing which pushes you to explore more. The famous Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La pass around Gangtok have relishing views that no one would like to miss.

This was all about a one-day travel itinerary for Gangtok. Being a part of Sikkim’s travel journey, Gangtok is always a popular tourist destination and the first city to be explored.
